Tending the Ordinary Magic
At Goldfinch Farm, we spend a lot of time thinking about why we do what we do. Yes, it’s about raising healthy animals, building soil, and growing food—but it’s also about the deeper heartbeat under all of that. The thing that keeps us moving through frozen water buckets, rogue goats, hawk drama, and the million little daily farm chores that stitch our lives together.
Over the past year, we’ve been working through the “whole farm” approach to write a holistic goal for our family and our farm. It’s a way of identifying what matters most—our quality of life, the kind of work we want to do, and the world we hope to hand off to the next generation.
And now that it’s written, it felt right to share it with you—our friends, customers, neighbors, and the people who help make this farm what it is.
Why a Holistic Goal?
A holistic goal isn’t a business plan.
It’s not a mission statement.
And it’s definitely not something that sits in a binder and gathers dust.
Instead, it’s a living guidepost—a way of making decisions that keep us aligned with our values even when things get busy, messy, or complicated (…so, most days).
It helps us ask questions like:
Does this project support our family’s quality of life?
Does it improve the land and ecosystem?
Does it build the kind of community we want to be part of?
Does it spark joy, connection, or a sense of wonder?
Our Holistic Goal
At Goldfinch Farm, we strive to create a joyful and secure home for our family, providing meaningful work and fostering curiosity in our children. We commit to raising animals and crops with care, stewarding the land through regenerative practices that restore biodiversity and build soil health. As a gateway to the “ordinary magic” of the natural world, we aim to inspire our family, friends, and community to reconnect with nature through shared experiences on the farm. By collaborating with our community and sharing what we grow, we hope to leave the land and local food systems healthier, more resilient, and more connected for future generations.
What “Ordinary Magic” Means to Us
If you’ve spent any time on the farm—whether you’ve picked up chickens, dropped off compost, attended a community dinner, or followed along on social media—you’ve probably heard us talk about “ordinary magic.”
It’s that moment when:
a child holds a warm egg for the first time
the goats clear brush and reveal a hidden patch of wildflowers
blue jays shout their alarm calls overhead, warning the hens
a season turns and you feel it in the wind
compost becomes soil, and soil becomes food
Our hope is that Goldfinch Farm is a gateway to moments like these—not just for us, but for everyone who visits, follows, supports, or shares a meal grown from this land.
Looking Ahead
With this holistic goal as our compass, every decision we make—from grazing rotations to farm events to the products we offer—will be grounded in the values that started it all: family, stewardship, community, and a deep love for the land we call home.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
Thank you for eating local food, supporting small farms, and cheering us on.
And thank you for finding magic in the everyday right alongside us.
If you want to follow along as we work toward this goal—whether through blog posts, chickens, goats, kids, or kitchen experiments—stick around. There’s so much more to come.
